Chapter Six

Denny strode beside James, with whom he had cemented a tentative friendship today, and Darcy. They had been told that Lizzy, Kitty, and Miss Lucas were ambling the halls near the nursery and here they sought them. Denny glanced at Darcy. His respect for the man as a landowner, a husband, and a gentleman had increased, but he was not an easy man. It was clear from his lack of engagement and terse replies to Denny’s enquiries that he did not return Denny’s respect, but perhaps held him in suspicion and even disdain.

Denny’s former association with Wickham and men of his ilk seemed to haunt him. Though winning Darcy’s respect was of little consequence, Denny would prefer more ease in this visit.

“There you are,” Darcy said.

Denny looked up. Lizzy, Kitty, and Miss Lucas stopped, having met them at a corner of the vast halls. Miss Lucas was radiant, a baby held in her arms.

“More that here you are,” Lizzy said with a twinkling smile. “How do the tenants, and the roads?”

“Well enough. Passable.”

“Mr. Denny, you have not met Edward,” Lizzy said.

Miss Lucas passed the baby, a handsome little fellow, to Lizzy, who held him facing Denny. The boy raised his hand, as if in salute. Denny saluted back and bowed, holding out a finger as he stopped at Edward’s level. “Pleased to meet you, Master Edward.”

Edward took his finger and gurgled.

With a smile, Denny responded, “Yes, it is a lovely day for a stroll. And I applaud you for taking it in such enchanting company.”

Edward gurgled again and said something akin to “Ba.”

Denny looked to Darcy, who also seemed to take that as an appeal to himself. “Come,” Darcy said, lifting his son to him. He held him so they could look at each other. Edward grabbed at his father’s ear. “I believe he wants a private word.”

Darcy, son in his arms, walked them down the hall, Darcy whispering lowly when Edward was silent. Lizzy gazed at the two with great affection and indulgence.

“How did you ladies pass the morning?” Denny said.

“Playing with Edward,” Lizzy said.

Kitty leaned into James. “Maria and I had a cozy visit.”

“I am envious,” he said with a quick glance at Miss Lucas. Her cheeks shone, her expression almost astonished. Then her sly smile returned, this time with a hint of hauteur.

“You gentlemen shall have your turn by the fire.”

“’Twas not the fire I meant.”

Miss Lucas bit her lower lip. No, it was not the fire he wished to be near.

“And when are you to visit us?” James said to Miss Lucas, letting Denny know he had strayed into dangerous territory.

As an army man, James must know, though, that the largest gains could be had by advancing into risk. As protective as James and Darcy were of the women of their family and acquaintance, which Denny wholly approved, he ought make his intentions known. But he had to ascertain Miss Lucas’s feelings first.

“If you will excuse me,” Lizzy said, “we have luncheon in the morning room.
